God has provided me with a lovely flat, a great wife, and a new calling to be a writer. All things I could absolutely not have engineered on my own. Often i find that God answers my prayer before I have had the wit to pray it.

Also, the chapter gives a marvellous account of Middle Eastern hospitality.

His years of exile taught Jacob to be cautious. Not exactly faith-filled! But he did come with the aim of making amends to his brother, whatever the cost. Which led to that strange encounter with God/Gods’ angel – a painful struggle.

St Anthony of the Desert sustained a long period of sexual temptation, which God finally took away. Anthony asked, Why did you not deal with it sooner. God answered, “I wanted to see you fight!”
